Rawlins Library: August Programming

Live music, makerspace opportunities, and Storytime in the Park are all part of Rawlins Library’s programming this August.

STRAW ROCKET TAKE AND MAKE

Throughout the month of August pick up your take and make straw rocket kits at Rawlins Library to transform basic art supplies into soaring rockets. Full kits with directions are available while supplies last.

DESIGN A BOOKMARK COMPETITION

Through Monday, Aug. 14

Before 5 p.m. on Aug. 14 kids ages 6-17 can submit safari themed bookmark designs to Rawlins Library. The winning designs will be distributed to Rawlins Library patrons throughout the month of September. For a complete list of contest rules, visit rawlinslibrary.org or visit the library in person.

BOOKOPOLY

Through Oct. 31

The Bookopoly game challenges you to read seven books between now and Oct. 31 by following the themes on the “Bookopoly” game board; it comes complete with Get Out of Jail Free cards. To sign up for the challenge and a chance to win Pierre Pride dollars, visit Rawlins Library – where there’s always “free parking”.

STORYTIME AT THE PARK  

Wednesdays in August, 10 a.m. & 10:30 a.m.

Rawlins is headed outdoors for preschool “Storytime at the Park.” The library will host two sessions every Wednesday in August. 

August 2 & 9: Fischers Lilly Park, Ft Pierre        

August 16: La Barge Park, Pierre                       

August 23: Devine Park, Pierre                           

TEACHER FAIR

Aug. 1 & 3, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Rawlins Library will provide informational sessions about teacher library cards, and the library resources that are available to all teachers in Pierre and Fort Pierre.

BOOK TALK

Wednesday, Aug. 2, 1 p.m.

Local writer Nancy Tystad Koupal will walk through how Laura Ingalls Wilder’s memoir is weaved into the Little House on the Prairie series in her book Pioneer Girl, the Path Into Fiction. The event is free and open to the public.

HANK HARRIS OUTDOOR CONCERT

Friday, Aug. 4, 1 P.M.

Join South Dakota musician Hank Harris for a free outdoor concert on the library lawn. Bring your own seat to enjoy his original musical selection.

MAKERSPACE MONDAY: CRAFTY CRAYONS

Monday, Aug. 7, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. 

Kids of all ages are invited to participate in “Makerspace Monday” programming where participants will make crayon characters from basic craft supplies.

Free Time with Board Games

Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Rawlins Library has a new assortment of board games for kids including: DOS, Sequence, Monopoly Junior, Pictureka!, Twister, The Game of Life: Super Mario, CandyLand, and UNO. Find these and other classic board games at this come-and-go afternoon program.

Free Time with Legos

Wednesday, Aug. 9, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. 

Meet your friends for an afternoon of building with LEGO bricks, minifigures and more. This come-and-go afternoon program meets in the SD Room.

Free Time with Puppets, Board Games, Duplo & More

Thursday, Aug.10, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. 

Have fun with board games, LEGO and Duplo, puppet theater and more at Rawlins 

Library’s come-and-go program.

BEGINNER’S TECHNOLOGY: MOUSE & KEYBOARD BASICS

Thursday, Aug. 10, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Learn how to left-click, right-click, double click, use basic command keys, and navigate various areas of the keyboard. Registration required by calling 605.773.7421.

ONGONG USED BOOK SALE

Starts Saturday, Aug. 12

Rawlins Library is turning over its inventory, and that means books coming out of circulation are for sale. Hardcovers are going for 50 cents, softcovers for 25 cents, audio books are $1, and you can get a whole bag for $5.

STORYTIME AT PIERRE’S FARMER’S MARKET

Saturday, Aug. 12, 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Join Rawlins Library staff at the Pierre’s Farmer’s Market for an outdoor preschool storytime with lively 

storytelling and sing-along fun.  Weather permitting.

Makerspace Monday: Perler Beads

Monday, Aug. 14, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. 

Kids of all ages are invited to participate in Makerspace Monday featuring Perler beads. Kids will use their imagination to make their very own Perler bead designs.

BEGINNER’S TECHNOLOGY: NAVIGATING WEBSITES

Thursday, Aug. 17, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Learn basic terminology, functionality, and navigation of internet browsers, search engines and websites. Registration required by calling 605.773.7421.

OUTDOOR YARD GAMES AT THE LIBRARY

Monday, Aug. 21, 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Relax after school with an hour of fun outdoor yard games on the lawn of Rawlins Library. 

HITCHHIKING ACROSS SOUTH DAKOTA

Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1 p.m.

Matthew Reitzel with the South Dakota State Archives will share the travel journal of Earl Neller. Mr. Neller hitchhiked across South Dakota with six children during the Great Depression. The program is free and open to the public.

BEGINNER’S TECHNOLOGY: EMAIL BASICS

Thursday, Aug. 24, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Create a Gmail account, learn how to perform basic email functions like send, receive and reply to an email. Registration required by calling 605.773.7421.
