[ARCHIVED] Rawlins Library: August Programming

 A coding club, a picnic, and an author talk are all coming your way this August compliments of Rawlins Municipal Library.

CODING CLUB

Aug. 1 -11, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

School kids get a chance to experiment with coding in a safe place. Chromebooks, computers, coding books and other resources will be provided by Rawlins Library.

  • 3rd-5th Grades: Mondays and Wednesdays
  • 6th-8th Grades: Tuesdays and Thursdays

RESCUE READERS 

Aug. 2, Aug. 16, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., PAWS Animal Rescue

Young readers can practice reading aloud to kittens that love company. Through a partnership with PAWS animal rescue, Rawlins host young readers (first grade and up) at the animal rescue shelter. Seats are limited; register at rawlinslibrary.org

STORYTIME AT THE PARK

Aug. 3-4 & 17-18, 10:15 a.m. & 10:45 a.m.

Weather permitting, enjoy storytime in the great outdoors. This summer, Rawlins staff is holding special storytimes at area parks. 

  • Aug. 3, Aug. 4: Lilly Park, Fort Pierre
  • Aug. 17, Aug. 18: Griffin Park, Pierre

MEET THE AUTHOR: NICK ESTES

Friday, Aug.5, 12 p.m., River Cities Transit, Dakota Room

The 2022 One Book South Dakota Author Tour is coming to Pierre! Nick Estes, Our History is the Future author, will discuss his book about the 2016 protest encampment at the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota and its historical context. He’ll also answer questions and sign books. The author talk will be held at the Dakota Room at River Cities Transit. It is free and open to the public. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.

SUMMER PICNIC

Friday, Aug. 12, 11:30 a.m.

Rawlins Summer Reading program will wrap up with a picnic at the Steamboat Park picnic shelter on Aug. 12. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch; dessert will be provided. Kids who turned in reading logs for summer reading will also be given awards. RSVP by Aug. 8 at 605.773.7421.

READING TO PUMPKIN PYE

Saturday, Aug. 13, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

He’s patient, non-judgmental, and loves having books read to him. Let your youngsters practice their skills by reading to therapy dog Pumpkin Pye. His appearance is provided by Therapy Dogs International and handler Elaine Pye.

SUMMER READING LOG AND BINGO SHEET DEADLINE

Aug. 18

Turn in your completed summer reading logs and bingo sheets for a chance to win prizes.

CHRISTENING OF THE USS SOUTH DAKOTA

Aug. 26, 1 p.m.

Join Matthew Reitzel, SD State Archives, to learn about the 1941 radio broadcast of the christening of the Battleship USS South Dakota. The event will be in the Dakota Room at the library; it is free and open to the public.

ADULT BINGO CARD DEADLINE

Aug. 31

Turn in your completed Rawlins Library BINGO card by Aug. 31 for a chance to win a new tablet.
