[ARCHIVED] Land Rezoned; Site Planning Contract Approved

City owned land in east central Pierre has been rezoned for heavy industrial use, and in a separate but related move, the City Commission approved an engineering contract for the rezoned area.

The rezoned area, located west of the City’s material recovery site, will eventually be used as a material processing site for the City. But before that can happen, it needed to be rezoned.

"We’re relocating our stock pile of materials from various locations to the site now,” said Brad Palmer, City Utilities Director. “With the new zoning, we’ll be allowed to crush the recycled concrete and asphalt right on site; it will make operations more efficient.”

The area was previously zoned for agricultural use.

The City is also planning to make the site more usable in the future. At this week’s meeting, the City Commission approved a $27,480 contract with Brosz Engineering; the firm will develop a storm water drainage plan that allows for road development.

“The area has a major ravine. We’ll need to fill that space in to expand usable space. Proper drainage and road development will be key to keeping the land use viable,” said Palmer.

The City expects to start processing materials at the site before the end of the year.
