The City of Pierre’s Summer Recreation Guide is now online and features more than two dozen programs for kids of all ages.
Among the summer rec programs are swimming, tennis, drama classes and Safety Town. The Rec Department is also offering a line-up of one-day programs like Gone Fishing and a Ninja Style Field Day.
New to the menu this summer is the Drums Alive program. Mindy Cheap, Recreation Superintendent and certified Drums Alive instructor says that Drums Alive is a fun and energizing program for kids of all ages and abilities.
“I am really excited to bring the Drums Alive program to Pierre,” said Cheap. “We use large exercise balls, music, and drumsticks to encourage physical, cognitive, and social health.”
“There is a Drums Alive version designed for senior citizens, but we’ll obviously be offering a different version through the summer rec programming.”
Summer recreation registration opens Monday, May 16. Programming begins the first full week of June and wraps up in August. For registration details and a complete list of program schedules, fees, and age restrictions, visit cityofpierre.org, and visit the recreation page.

Approximately 400 kids participate in city summer recreation activities each year.
