[ARCHIVED] City Considers Removing Some Licensing Requirements

City Of Pierre South Dakota

Auctioneers, movie theaters, and bowling alleys might not require a license from the city next year.

At this week’s meeting, the Pierre City Commission took first reading of a plan to repeal the sections of ordinance that require each of those businesses to be licensed annually by the city.

Twila Hight, City Finance Officer, says that the ordinances are archaic with portions dating back to the 1950s.

“We recently did a review of our licensing section and determined that those regulations are no longer necessary,” said Hight. “We have licenses in place to protect the community and consumers. The three sections we want to repeal don’t do that.”

The commission will hear the second reading of the ordinance change at the Oct. 26 commission meeting.  If the commission approves the change, the licensing requirements will be removed by the end of the year.

“These licenses are currently renewed annually with the start of each new year,” said Hight. “Timing is good. If the change is made, the businesses won’t need to deal with the licensing process in 2022.”
