Next week the Pierre community will get a chance to take a tour of Pierre’s Community Orchard.
Guided tours of the Orchard, located at 1201 East Sully Avenue, begin at 4 p.m. on Oct. 11. Tours will be offered until 6 p.m. Monday evening. Participants will learn about the various species of fruit trees planted in the orchard.
The event is sponsored by the City of Pierre Arbor Board and the Pierre Community Orchard Project.
The Pierre Community Orchard Project was established in 2018 through a partnership between Girl Scouts Troop #40080 and the City of Pierre. The Orchard is situated on 6,400 square feet of city-owned land and features 22 fruit trees including pear, peach, plum, apple and cherry.
The orchard has started producing fruit. If the plants remain fruitful next year, community members will be invited to harvest the produce for the local food pantry, community meals, or personal use.
