Beginning Thursday, August 19, the City of Pierre is asking residents to change their lawn watering schedule to help lower daily demand from the city’s water distribution system.
Properties with addresses that end in an odd number should limit lawn irrigation to days with odd numbers; properties with addresses that end in an even number should limit lawn irrigation to even number days.
“If your address is 222 or 1804, you’ll water on the 20th, 22nd, the 24th and so on,” explained Brad Palmer, City Utilities Director. “If your address is 2301, you’ll water on the 19th, 21st, 23rd and so on.”
The restriction is necessary because a large water main running under Highland Avenue is currently under construction. That line feeds one of the city’s water reservoirs making it difficult to get water to the reservoir for distribution to customers.
“We have an adequate water supply,” said Palmer. “However, construction on Highland Ave. is impacting how our reservoirs fill and creating a temporary water storage issue.”
The storage issue will resolve when the water main project is complete. The water restriction will remain in place until then; the project is expected to wrap up in late September.
