[ARCHIVED] Highland Avenue Construction Begins July 12

Weather pending, the complete rebuild of five blocks of Highland Avenue is scheduled to start on Monday, July 12.

To accommodate the work, Highland Ave., between Wynoka Ave. and Seneca St., will close to through traffic beginning Monday morning. Additionally, on Monday, the Highland and Oak, and Highland and Seneca intersections will close.

The closures will remain in place until the project is complete.

“The Highland Avenue project is a major one,” said City Engineer John Childs. “We anticipate the project will extend through mid-October.”

During the project, including one block of Second St. that connects Highland and Euclid Avenues, a 70-year-old water main will be replaced, new curb and gutter will be installed, and the street will receive a new asphalt surface.

In May, the Pierre City Commission awarded a $1.4 million contract to Morris Inc. to complete the project.

Each year, city staff analyzes street, utility, and other infrastructure conditions to prioritize and schedule street projects.  The City Commission set aside more than $3 million dollars for street maintenance and improvements in 2021.
