Fifth graders throughout the community are learning about energy in a new way this year. That’s thanks to a partnership between the schools and the City of Pierre.

The City is providing participating schools with Power Team lesson plans, student workbooks, and all the materials needed for classroom exercises. The Power Team materials focus on types of energy, renewable and non-renewable energy resources, how to measure energy, as well as energy conservation.

The curriculum meets the state’s education standards and provides hands-on learning opportunities. Both Saint Joseph School and Pierre Public Schools are participating in the program and have received their lesson plans.

“The children and I love hands on learning and problem solving. This curriculum does both.” said Rachel Arbach, Jefferson Elementary Teacher.

Gay Pickner, Saint Joseph School Teacher said, “New curriculum is like a big Christmas present –and this gift doesn’t even impact our budget!”

The Power Team curriculum is provided to schools at no cost by the City of Pierre and Missouri River Energy Services (MRES). MRES is a not-for-profit whole sale power provider that supplies 40% of Pierre’s electricity.

Brad Palmer, City Utilities Director, says that although the program is new to Pierre, it’s been tried out in almost 30 other communities.

“The program is really popular among educators who have used it,” said Palmer. “So, we feel really good about this partnership with our schools.”

“As we always say in public power, what’s good for our customers is good for us.”
