[ARCHIVED] City Waives Penalty Fees until June

Tonight, the Pierre City Commission responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with some utility relief for its customers.

For the months of April and May, the City will waive the past due fee for people who can’t pay their utility bill on time. The change applies to bills that are issued in April and bills that are issued in May, allowing customers more than four full weeks to make payment. Customers are reminded that bills reflect the previous month’s utility use.

Mayor Steve Harding says that he knows there are community members negatively impacted by COVID-19 and this is one step the Commission can take without jeopardizing essential services.

“We know this can’t fix all the financial concerns people may be having right now, but we’re happy to be able to alleviate some of the burden,” said Harding.

The City of Pierre doesn’t generate electricity; it buys it and distributes it. Ongoing utility revenues are used to purchase electricity that is then distributed to homes and businesses.

Utility customers are also reminded that provides savings tips that can help reduce utility bills.

If you have questions about your utility bill, you are encouraged to call Pierre City Hall at 605.773.7407.
