[ARCHIVED] Commission Approves Changes to Golf Fees; Approves Contract

Tonight, the Pierre City Commission accepted recommendations from the Pierre Golf Board to adjust fees at Hillsview Golf Course, Pierre’s municipal course.

In 2020, season passes at Hillsview will increase by 6 percent. The Golf Board hasn’t recommended an increase in three years and recommended one this year to cover increasing expenses at the course.

“With time, the cost of doing business goes up,” said Tom Farnsworth, City Parks and Recreation Director. “Our golf course is no different. That 6 percent helps us maintain our level of service.”

Farnsworth did note that golf operations are highly weather dependent. In the last three years, the season has waffled between 243 days and 207 days. The 2019 season suffered from a late start, an early end and more than 30 bad weather days. Even with challenging weather conditions, 24,650 rounds of golf were played and nearly 40 events were hosted at Hillsview during the 2019 season.

“Carin Hayn, our Hillsview Manager, does a fantastic job of hosting and recruiting events for the community and our course,” said Farnsworth. “She already has Hillsview set to host the State AA Girls Championships and the SDGA Senior and Pre Senior Men’s Championships next summer.”

At the meeting tonight, the Commission also approved another three-year contract for Hayn. Hayn, a Certified PGA Professional, has held the contract for managing Hillsview since 2013. In that role, she is responsible for hosting events, managing the Pro Shop and Club House and providing food service.

Hayn has been a member of the PGA for 25 plus years and has achieved the class A status as a golf professional.
