Rawlins Library to Host African Harp Demonstration

The Kora, a West African 21-stringed harp, will be featured during an upcoming performance and educational demonstration at Rawlins Municipal Library.

Sean Gaskell, who has studied the Kora extensively, will give his demonstration at 6:30 p.m. at Rawlins Library on Monday, May 13. The event is free and open to the public.

The Kora is a 300-year-old instrument native to West African countries including Senegal, Mali and Gambia. It is known as a melodic instrument. Traditional Kora songs often tell ancient stories of war and give praise to people of high status.

Gaskell will play traditional Kora music, as well as personal compositions. Gaskell has been featured at numerous festivals in the U.S., Gambia, and Senegal.
