[ARCHIVED] 2016 Drinking Water Report Released

PIERRE, S.D–The results of the 2016 Drinking Water Report are in, and Pierre’s drinking water is safe.

According to City Water Superintendent Dane Brewer, this is nothing new.

“Every year, the City of Pierre tests its drinking water to make sure it meets all federal and state safety guidelines,” said Brewer. “We have a great track record. I don’t remember a time when we didn’t meet all drinking water standards.”

Each year the City is mandated by the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources to test its drinking water for contaminants. At the May 9 City Commission meeting, the City released the 2016 test results. The results showed the city’s water is in full compliance with federal and state standards.

The 2016 test results are based on a series of water samples conducted throughout the year at a variety of locations within the Pierre water system. Government regulations require testing for numerous water contaminants annually. The Water Report will be included in the June 2 city utility bill mailing. Customers can also find copies at Rawlins Municipal Library, Pierre City Hall and online at

The City of Pierre serves more than 13,640 customers who use an average of 2,627,000 gallons of water each day. The City’s water service is supplied by groundwater that is produced from a series of local wells.
