PIERRE, S.D. – More than 80 blocks of Pierre’s city streets are scheduled for upgrades in 2017.
City staff detailed the preliminary construction project list during last night’s City Commission meeting putting special emphasis on two major projects planned for the 2017 construction season.
“We have an entire street rebuild planned for Capitol Avenue from Nicollet Avenue east toward Wells,” said Brad Palmer, City Utilities Director. “The project will include repair or replacement of water main, sanitary sewer service, storm sewer work, curb, gutter, sidewalk, street lights and surfacing. It will be comprehensive.”
Palmer told the Commissioners that State and City officials are already working together to minimize disruptions to traffic and parking.
“It’s a major project. We won’t be able to eliminate all inconveniences, but we’re doing what we can to lessen them.”
The other large project of note is the street surfacing and curb and gutter work planned for Harrison Avenue between Capitol and Robinson.
Smaller projects throughout the community are also scheduled for next summer. They include everything from completely rebuilding streets, to upgrading underground utilities, to resurfacing roads. Together, these infrastructure improvements combined with road preservation plans are estimated at a cost of $2.4-million.
“City infrastructure is a priority for our commission,” said Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill. “The construction plan and street maintenance program are by far our biggest budget item each year.”
