Gill Selected President of Municipal League
Pierre, SD –Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill has been elected as President of the South Dakota Municipal League.
As President of the organization, Gill will lead Municipal League efforts to provide inter-community cooperation, study the challenges facing communities throughout South Dakota, and increase municipal government efficiency.
“During her time as a League Board member Laurie has proven herself to be a strong leader and advocate for local government,” said Yvonne Taylor, Municipal League Executive Director. “I have no doubt she will serve communities throughout the state very well during her term as president.”
Gill has been a Municipal League Board member since 2010 and has served in a variety of leadership roles including Trustee, Second Vice President, First Vice President and Chair of the Resolutions Committee. In 2011, Gill was awarded by the Municipal League with the Excellence in Municipal Government Award for her leadership during the 2011 Missouri River flood response and recovery efforts.
“During my time with local government, I have found the League to be an invaluable resource,” said Mayor Gill. “It’s an honor to work alongside the League’s staff and with the many public servants who make up the League’s membership.”
The South Dakota Municipal League represents the state’s 310 incorporated municipalities. Organized in 1934, the League’s mission is to facilitate the cooperative improvement of municipal government in South Dakota.
Gill is Pierre’s 18th mayor. First elected Mayor in 2008, Gill is now in her third term. Prior to being elected mayor, she served as a Pierre City Commissioner for nine years. As a part-time Mayor, Gill also has a full-time job as Commissioner of the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources.
