[ARCHIVED] Pierre Named Tax-Friendly Destination for Retirees

Pierre Named Tax-Friendly Destination for Retirees

Pierre, SD – If you’re thinking about retiring, think about Pierre.

The city has recently been named to SmartAsset’s list of most tax-friendly places for retirees. South Dakota’s capital city came in as the sixth most tax-friendly South Dakota community for retired people. The ranking was based on a number of factors including income tax paid, property tax rates, sales tax paid and fuel tax paid.

“South Dakota has no personal income tax so that automatically bumps many South Dakota communities into the upper echelon of tax-friendliness,” said SmartAsset spokesman, Steve Sabato. “When you combine that with the other affordability factors of Pierre, you end up with a very inviting community.”

For different reasons last year, SmartAsset named Pierre one of the top ten best places in South Dakota for retirees. Based on the number or recreation centers and retirement centers available to seniors, as well as, the percentage of the population who are senior citizens, SmartAsset named Pierre to the list of best social cities for retirees.

“These studies draw a very compelling picture for people are who entering the retirement stage,” said Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill. “I’m pleased that from both a policy and recreational standpoint, Pierre is proving to be an attractive destination for retirees.”

Mayor Gill said that city government has been working hard to provide opportunities for retired community members to stay active.

The city Recreation Department offers a seasoned citizen program. Now in its fourth year, the program includes line dancing, pickleball, Tai Chi, computer classes, book club, and a variety of crafting classes.
