PIERRE, SD – A corroded storm sewer pipe has caused a sinkhole on Fourth Street near the North Euclid intersection; westbound traffic on Fourth Street will remain restricted until repairs can be completed.
City staff expects repair work to begin within the next four weeks and is currently in the process of soliciting quotes for labor and materials. At their regularly scheduled meeting on May 24, the Pierre City Commission approved an emergency declaration request allowing staff to expedite the repair work.
“An emergency declaration gives municipalities the ability to utilize a quote process rather than a bid process when soliciting products or contractors,” said Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill. “The quote process is much quicker, allowing us to fix the problem and mitigate any additional damage to the roadway.”
Barricades are currently established around the Fourth Street sinkhole. There is no public safety concern. The barricades are in place to prevent vehicle damage and further deterioration of the street and underground utilities.
