[ARCHIVED] 2015 Drinking Water Report Released

2015 Drinking Water Report Released

PIERRE, S.D. –The City of Pierre’s drinking water is safe, and that’s nothing new.

Each year the City is mandated by the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources to test its drinking water for contaminants. At the April 5 City Commission meeting, the City released the 2015 test results, and they showed the city’s water is in full compliance with federal and state standards.

City Water Superintendent Dane Brewer says that Pierre has a long history of providing safe high-quality drinking water.

“To the best of my knowledge, Pierre’s water has always met federal and state drinking water standards,” said Brewer. “Despite the purity of our natural water supply, the City takes extra precautions to make sure nothing is negatively impacting the safety of our drinking water.”

Just last year the state recognized Pierre’s public water system and operations team with a Drinking Water Certificate of Achievement Award. This award recognizes Pierre for meeting all requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act including compliance monitoring and reporting, drinking water standards, and certification requirements.

The 2015 test results are based on a series of water samples conducted throughout the year at a variety of locations within the Pierre water system. Government regulations require testing for numerous water contaminants annually, but some contaminates are tested every three years and are required to report the highest level within the past 5 years. Test results are available at, and results are being distributed with utility bills throughout the current billing cycle.

The City of Pierre serves more than 13,640 customers who use an average of 2,627,000 gallons of water each day. The City’s water service is supplied by groundwater that is produced from a series of local wells.
