[ARCHIVED] Workforce Development Council Launches Survey

Workforce Development Council Launches Survey

Pierre, SD – The Pierre/Fort Pierre Workforce Development Council has launched a survey directed at high school students, educators, employers and job seekers. The survey is designed to inform the Council about workforce barriers that exist in the area.

Mayor Laurie Gill assembled the Workforce Development Council last fall to address local workforce challenges and says that this survey is a step toward understanding the workforce concerns and finding reasonable solutions.

“There are many assumptions about various factors that play into the workforce shortage. The council is taking measured steps to make sure the assumptions are validated and leading us to realistic solutions that can affect positive change,” said Mayor Gill.

The survey is being distributed through partner networks like the Riggs and Stanley County school systems, the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce and others.

Laura Schoen Carbonneau, CEO of the chamber co-chairs the Council’s Recruitment Committee.

“The chamber is encouraging all of its members to take the survey. It only takes about five minutes to complete and will go a long way toward helping the council identify solutions,” said Schoen Carbonneau.

The survey asks students questions about their future plans, asks educators about their perception of local post-secondary education opportunities, asks employers about soft skill challenges, and job seekers about local career opportunities. The survey results will be discussed at the next workforce development council meeting in March.

“We really hope to see strong participation from our targeted groups,” said Mayor Gill. “This survey is their chance to provide direct input to the conversation and help shape solutions. I’m anxious to see the results.”

The Pierre/Fort Pierre Workforce Development Council membership includes a cross-section of about 30 government, quasi-government, tribal and private-industry stakeholders.
