Check Contractor Credentials
Pierre, S.D. – The City of Pierre is encouraging residents to check credentials before hiring an out-of-town contractor for residential work.
All residential contractors operating within the City of Pierre are required to be licensed with the City, have current Liability Insurance and a Contractors Excise Tax license from the State of South Dakota.
“We have received recent reports of non-licensed contractors selling their services around Pierre,” said John Irvine, City Building Official. “In the past, we have had problems with non-licensed contractors doing shoddy work and then skipping town.”
Irvine went on to say that disreputable contractors often prey on communities that have recently sustained storm damage.
“With the recent local wind and hail storms, it’s likely we’ll see some influx of both reputable and disreputable contractors looking for shingling, siding and window repair work.”
To confirm if a contractor is licensed to work in Pierre, contact City Hall at 605.773.7341 and ask for John Irvine.
