[ARCHIVED] Pierre: A Great Place to Retire

Pierre, S.D. –Add retirement to the list -it’s one more reason Pierre is a great place to live. That’s according to SmartAsset, a financial technology company that recently ranked Pierre as one of South Dakota’s best social cities for retirees.

Based on the number or recreation centers and retirement centers available to seniors, as well as, the percentage of the population who are senior citizens, SmartAsset named Pierre the ninth best place to retire in South Dakota.

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill says it’s great for the community to be recognized, especially for its recreational opportunities.

“As a community and as a city government, Pierre has worked very hard to develop the infrastructure and programming that encourages recreation,” said Mayor Gill. “We recognize the senior population as an important part of our community and accordingly have recently started a seasoned citizen program.”

The seasoned citizen program is in its third year and offered through the City’s Recreation Department. Programming includes line dancing, pickleball, Tai Chi, computer classes, book club, and a variety of crafting classes. Mayor Gill went on to say that the senior-specific classes are in addition to a host of other recreational opportunities available in Pierre for people of all ages.

They include an 18-hole golf course, a 50-mile trail system, public fishing piers and fish cleaning station, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, 9 parks totaling 97 acres of park space and an arboretum. For more information about the recreational opportunities in Pierre, click here.
