Sixth Annual “Go Green” Campaign Ready to Go
Kickoff Event Set For April 22

PIERRE, S.D. – More than 100 volunteers will soon be planting trees, picking up trash, and otherwise beautifying Pierre as part of this year’s Go Green and Clean campaign.

Mayor Laurie Gill will officially kick-off the campaign, a civic-pride volunteer program, with a public address on April 22 at Georgia Morse Middle School. The program gets underway at 2:15 p.m. in the school lunch room; the public is welcome to attend.

Gill launched the annual campaign in 2009 after being elected mayor.

This is our sixth year, and I believe this is a record turnout of organizations, businesses, state agencies, schools and individual participants,” said Mayor Gill. “I am truly humbled by this great display of volunteerism and community service by our citizens.”

The City organizes Go Green and Clean activities throughout the entire year, but the spring clean-up push always garners the most community participation. This year, there are 27 groups helping Pierre get shined back up after the long winter. In 2014, 25 community groups participated in the spring campaign.

“We have a number of groups who rolled up their sleeves in 2014 to help keep Pierre looking its best who are back to do it again in 2015,” said Mayor Gill. “Projects include cleaning up road right-of-ways to painting park structures, to giving the statues along the Trail of Governors a bath.”

Pierre is always looking for new Go Green initiatives and partnerships. Citizens with an interest in the campaign should contact Tom Farnsworth, Director of Parks and Recreation at 773-2527.
