Commissioner Matthew T. Reitzel

Parks and Recreation Commissioner 

Matthew T. Reitzel has proudly called Pierre home for the past twenty years. Originally from Alexandria, South Dakota, he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Northern State University and a master’s degree in history from Oklahoma State University.

Since 2005, Matthew has served as the Manuscript/Photo Archivist at the South Dakota State Archives, located within the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. He has a strong history of community involvement, having served on the Oahe Habitat for Humanity board and the Rawlins Library Board for six years. He has also contributed to numerous civic initiatives, including the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Pierre program (2018–2019), the Friends of Rawlins Library Steering Committee, the Civil War Monument Rededication Committee, and the Oahe Dam Dedication Planning Committee. Since 2010, he has shared local history through his weekly column, “Down by the Old Missouri,” in the Pierre Capital Journal.

An active member of Faith Lutheran Church, Matthew has served in various roles, including as an Elder, usher team leader, and member of the livestream crew. He and his wife Jessica have been married since 2003 and have two daughters, Emma and Lily.

“I am excited to talk with people about our city and look forward to this opportunity to serve the people of Pierre,” he says.
