Duties & Responsibilities
The Criminal Investigations Section is charged with the responsibility of conducting misdemeanor and felony investigations that are referred from the Patrol Section, as well as reports from the public or other agencies. In addition, the section is responsible for coordination of evidence management, D.A.R.E., and the School Resource Officers Program. The Investigations Section also conducts background investigations for employment and city liquor license applications.
Additional Responsibilities
The Criminal Investigations Section also assists with the registering and updating of information in the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry, as well as the investigation into those person(s) within the City of Pierre who fail to register or fail to update their registration as required under South Dakota Codified Laws.
A detective is assigned as a member on the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The task force is responsible for the investigation of internet child exploitation crimes.
The Criminal Investigations Section also provides assistance to the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Task Force.
The Criminal Investigation Section also conducts random compliance checks of all retail establishments who sell alcoholic beverages. In addition to the compliance checks, the Pierre Police School Resource Officers have been trained and serve as instructors for the Techniques in Alcohol Management (TAMS) Program.
The TAMS Program assists with teaching employees in alcoholic beverage sales establishments what to look for when checking the authenticity of drivers license and other forms of photographic identification. In addition, the program teaches the employees what actions to take in the event a person's identification is being questioned in relation to alcoholic beverage sales.
The Criminal Investigations Section also conducts presentations in the community for local retailers, banks, schools, and civic clubs on crime prevention topics.
