Law Enforcement
Torch Run for
Special Olympics

Making a difference one step at a time

(State Capitol Building, Pierre SD May 18, 2010)  --  Local, State, Federal, and Tribal law enforcement officers laced up their running shoes and took to the streets of Pierre Tuesday, not to patrol but to raise money for Special Olympics.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics raises money for the organization by running a torch across South Dakota.  The annual event begins in Rapid City and ends near Sioux Falls, with law officers volunteering to relaying the torch every step of the way.

Officers in training at the South Dakota Law Enforcement Training Academy in Pierre ran as a group Tuesday, carrying the torch up the steps of the State Capitol Building.  They were joined by veteran officers and supporters, including South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, the state's 'top cop.'

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill greeted the runners and offered a proclamation in honor of special Olympics and the officers work in its support.
