Park and Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes of 6/21/12 meeting
Tom Rounds called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m. Board members present were Rounds, Lewis, Mehlhaff, Hofer, and Judson. Absent was Dr. Rasmussen. Also attending were Commissioner Jeanne Goodman, Director Tom Farnsworth, and Recreation Supt. Mindy Cheap.
Motion to approve agenda – Lewis, seconded by Mehlhaff. Motion passed, 4-0.
Motion to approve the May meeting minutes – Lewis, seconded by Hofer. Motion passed, 4-0.
Lewis and Clark Trail – Farnsworth reported that the contractor has been laying granular material and park staff has been removing trees along the trail to allow access for equipment.
Public Facility Task Force – Rounds gave an update on the Public Task Force’s efforts in identifying what is need for a public facility for sports, multi-use, recreational activities. Tom discussed the committee has been surveying groups about their needs and potential funding.
4th Street Trail and Pond Project – Farnsworth provided an update on the project indicating staff recently submitted a grant to Game Fish & Parks (GF&P) to establish fishing access to the pond. It is expected the trail segment will be completed sometime this year. The play trail locations have not been determined at this time and the play pods are proposed for installation in 2013.
State Hershey Track Meet – Mindy provided an update on the progress for preparing for the State Hershey meet.
Twins Community Fund Grant – Farnsworth indicated Pony field rehabilitation will begin the week of July 4th with removal of underground storm drains. The goal is to rededicate the field by October. It was also indicated that the Griffin park baseball field and softball fields are in good shape.
Amphitheatre – Farnsworth reported that rehabilitation work continues with a new sound system being installed, which will allow additional opportunities next summer like movies in the park, etc… It was also discussed if more was being done to pigeon proof the structure.
Disc Golf Course in Steamboat – Farnsworth indicated that Filipek has volunteered to assist in the completion of the project. Filipek will refresh what is needed to complete and update the course (signs, tees, etc…). It is expected that the costs will be a 50/50 split between the City and local sponsors.
Other comments/business to come before the board – It was pointed out that maybe signage should be built and/or updated by the Chamber with information regarding traffic flow and parking in Steamboat park.
Being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 4:55 pm.
Next Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for July 19 at 4 pm.
