Public Facilities Task Force

Meeting Minutes

May 24, 2012

Mayor Laurie Gill called the meeting of the Public Facilities Task Force to order at 4:05 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the YMCA building. Mayor Gill commented how it was a year ago this very day that the City was notified and began preparations for the pending flood waters. Task Force members reflected on that day and how far the City has come with recovery efforts. Guests were welcomed and asked to register. Task Force members present were:

Carrie Gonsor, representing young professionals

Dr. Dan Rasmussen, representing young professionals

Tom Rounds, representing the Park and Recreation Advisory Board

Ellen Lee, representing St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation

Bob Sutton, representing the South Dakota Community Foundation

 Laura Schoen Carbonneau, representing the Chamber of Commerce

Paul Lepisto, representing sportsmen and sportswomen

Jeff Filipek, representing the YMCA

Task Force members absent were Norm Weaver, representing Hughes County, Dr. Kelly Glodt, representing the Pierre School District and Dennis Eisnach, representing senior citizens, . Staff attending was Tom Farnsworth, Director of Parks and Recreation, Leon Schochenmaier, City Administrator and Kevin Hipple, Hughes County Manager.

One guest and one member of the media were in attendance.    

A motion was made by Sutton to approve the agenda as presented. Gonsor second the motion. Motion carried. 

A motion was made by Lepisto to approve the minutes of the April 30, 2012 meeting. Filipek second the motion. Motion carried.

Mayor Gill reviewed how she has created two sub-committees from members of the Task Force. The administrative office space committee would be chaired by Bob Sutton and the sports facility committee would be chaired by Dr. Rasmussen. These sub groups are based upon the discussions of the Task Force from the April 30 meeting. 

Task Force members of the administrative office space committee are Gill, Weaver, Sutton, Glodt, Eisnach and Lee. Task Force members of the sports facility committee are Dr. Rasmussen, Filipek, Rounds, Schoen Carbonneau, Gonsor and Lepisto.

Mayor Gill asked each committee to meet separately, work on concepts, ideas and she will look for a report to the full Task Force of their recommendations at a later time. Schochenmaier will assist the sports facility committee and Hipple will assist the administrative office space committee as needed. Farnsworth will assist the Mayor with the main Task Force meetings.

Mayor Gill stated she would not reconvene the two sub-committees at the end of their discussions today but ask the Task Force to come together on June 14 at 5:00 pm if the groups were ready to report information.

The sub-committees then broke into different meeting rooms to begin discussions. Both groups concluded meeting at 5:35 pm.

The next meeting date of the Task Force is June 14 at 5:00 pm at a location to be determined.
