City of Pierre
Arbor Board Minutes
Tuesday, June 19, 2012
The June meeting of the City of Pierre Arbor Committee was held at City Hall. Dan McCormick called the meeting to order at noon. Those in attendance were Board Members: Dave Kruger, Tracy Laqua and Art Smith; Ex-Officio Members: Jeanne Goodman, Todd Kelly and Tom Farnsworth. Guests: Chelsey and Tammy from AmeriCorp. The May minutes were approved as printed.
Old Business:
Cities of Service:
Larry Weiss is in Chicago presenting the Pierre project to Cities of Service gathering.
Todd is working with Team BankWest and AmeriCorps volunteers this week to remove trees along Izaak Walton road, the sports complex and in the Arboretum. Next tree planting project will be discussed under New Business.
Tree Fund:
The fund continues to grow and is approaching $12,000. Most recent donation came from Korner Grocery sales of bacon-wrapped filets.
Oahe Days:
There was not enough help to cover a booth for the weekend, so there was not a donation table for the flood tree fund.
Arboretum:
City staff replaced the damaged sigs and sign holders.
Boy Scouts and City staff have been watering the flowers and bird feeding area.
CTAP Inventories:
Tom re-submitted the inventory map to Tiffany. Areas to be potentially inventoried: cemetery, all parks and historical district – Euclid to Central; Elizabeth to Broadway.
Trails Grant:
City staff has begun to clear the Lewis & Clark trail for the contractor. Discussion followed regarding the increased materials cost, potential funding issues for the project and relocating the entrance trail.
Trails/Tales/Trees – and tangerines:
Tom reported that Beverly Lewis said the event went well and over 100 children attended.
Parking:
Dave and Dennis surveyed the area for additional parking. There is room on the north side of the big cottonwood tree / service entrance for 8 pull-in parking spaces. Anything past that would require some fill to level the area. Dave met with Ike’s members to hear their ideas. They are looking at expanding their parking area to the east and north and do not intend to cross the road. At this time the Board will not pursue adding additional parking and moving the fence.
New Business:
Tree Deal:
Todd received an offer he couldn’t refuse and purchased 130 7-year old Black Hills Spruce trees, which are in 5 gallon containers. They arrived on Friday and will be used in several locations, including the Arboretum, golf course and along Izaak Walton road.
June Planting Day: Saturday, June 23, 9 AM to Noon
AmeriCorps volunteers Chelsey and Tammy approached the Board regarding a community service project their group can do before they leave town on June 26. They would like to help plant the spruce trees on Saturday, June 23. Dan will flag the planting locations. Arbor Board and Prairie Potters will be invited to assist. Todd will have a load of woodchips dumped on site and assign a staff person to bring a Bobcat down to help move the chips around.
Arboretum Shed:
Chelsey and Tammy offered to find AmeriCorps volunteers to paint the Arboretum shed one evening this week. Tracy will line up all the supplies and meet them at the shed. In the event they have other evening commitments, shed painting will be one of Saturday’s projects.
Meeting adjourned by Dan.
