Minutes of the Golf Advisory Board
July 2, 2012
Chairman Boyd Conzemius called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm. Board members present were Jennifer Stalley representing the HLGA, Craig Smith, Bill Olander, John Knox representing the OMGA and Scott Simpson. Absent was Dr. Schoessler. Also attending were Commissioner Jeanne Goodman, Superintendent Dean Heymans and Director Tom Farnsworth. Hayn was absent due to a death in the family.
Conzemius welcomed Scott Simpson as the newest member of the board. Simpson is filling the unexpired term of Carin Hayn.
Motion by Olander, second by Knox to approve the minutes of the June 4 board meeting. Motion carried.
Motion by Knox, second by Olander to accept the meeting agenda as presented. Motion carried.
Superintendent Heymans gave an update on the recovery of the course. The recent heat wave is a negative factor in the recovery of the turf. Work continues on recovering the greens and controlling weeds. Smith asked when Heymans felt the course could be open. Heymans said he would be able to give a better prediction on this in another two to four weeks. Conzemius said he has heard from many who feel the course should remain closed this year to allow for full recovery efforts. Heymans and Conzemius both said it is important to get input from Carin Hayn as this has an impact on her business and the pro-shop. Heymans said another factor to consider is he schedules aerification of the greens in mid August. Heymans anticipates re-drilling of certain areas of the course that need it and weed control will continue into the fall.
Director Farnsworth said the contractor has finished his work on the cart paths re-establishing gravel in the washed out areas. The Recreation department will be forwarding registrations to Carin for the second session youth golf program. Staff has been assisting Carin in getting the pro-shop up and running this past month. John Knox added that he, Larry Hayn and Chris Pritchard will be assisting Carin with the youth program. Approximately 50 area youth will be participating utilizing the practice area.
Conzemius and board members extended congratulations to John Knox for being selected SDHAA girl’s golf coach of the year. Knox thanked the board and said he has a great group of girls and parents to work with and is looking forward to next season.
Conzemius tabled the discussion regarding a date for a meet and greet event for Carin until such time she is available.
In other business, Knox said he is in discussions with the SDGA about state events returning to Hillsview and will keep the board informed. 2014 may be the soonest the SDGA would consider future events at Hillsview.
Board members asked about status of any FEMA reimbursements for flood repairs. Farnsworth and Goodman will look into this with the business office.
Next Golf Advisory Board Meeting is August 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the clubhouse.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
Respectively submitted,
Tom Farnsworth
