Minutes of the Golf Advisory Board

June 4, 2012

Richard Schoessler called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm. Schoessler was the only board member present for the meeting. Minutes were distributed of the May meeting. Board members absent were Boyd Conzemius, John Knox, representing the OMGA, Craig Smith, Bill Olander and Jennifer Stalley representing the HLGA. Also attending were Commissioner Jeanne Goodman, Superintendent Dean Heymans and Director Tom Farnsworth. There was one guest.

Superintendent Heymans gave an update on the recovery of the course and discussed the opinions of the USGA consultant Fred Soller who visited Hillsview on May 29. Approximately 30 guests attended the May 29 meeting to hear comments from Mr. Soller. A written report will be issued but the general consensus was great progress is being made on the recovery of the course. It was noted that a layer of silt remains on the greens and Heymans was working to reseed 14 of them. Heymans has also re-seeded the fairways on holes 1,9,5,6,and 7. The dredging of the irrigation pond is complete and it has made a significant difference in the recharge of the pond when the river levels rise. It was noted while the grass is growing so are many weeds and they will need to be maintained.  In discussion about opening the driving range it was felt that this is possible and will be considered in about two weeks. Manual ball picking of the range may have to be considered. Hayn and Heymans will notify Farnsworth and Commissioner Goodman so a public announcement of the opening of the driving range, hours of use, etc. can be made. It was noted that golfers who may want to use the putting greens for practice may do so.

Head Professional Carin Hayn reported she is making progress preparing for opening of the clubhouse and doing limited business at Hillsview this year. A date for an official opening, meet and greet reception will be announced at a later date. It was reaffirmed that the second session youth golf program will be held as scheduled which begins on July 9th. Interested youth should contact the recreation department to sign up for the youth program.

Director Farnsworth added that 78 carts remain in the cart sheds with 5 yet to pay cart storage fee for 2012. Of the 108 lockers available for rent only 45 have paid to reserve their space.

A board vacancy still remains on the advisory board. Interested golfers should contact the City for an application form at www.pierre.sd.gov and Mayor Gill will give consideration to them. Mayor Gill makes the appointment.

Next Golf Advisory Board Meeting is July 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the clubhouse.

Meeting was adjourned at 6:05 p.m.

Respectively submitted,

Tom Farnsworth
