Minutes of the Golf Advisory Board

May 7, 2012

Chairman B. Conzemius called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm. Board Members present were Boyd Conzemius, Joe Villa representing the OMGA, Craig Smith, Carin Hayn and Richard Schoessler. Absent were Bill Olander and Jennifer Stalley. Also attending were Commissioner Jeanne Goodman, Superintendent Dean Heymans and Director Tom Farnsworth. There was one guest.

A quorum of board members was present. Motion by Smith, second by Schoessler to approve the minutes of the April 2 meeting. Motion carried.

Motion by Schoessler, second by Smith to approve the agenda with one addition added food and beverage. Motion carried.

Superintendent Heymans gave an update on the recovery of the course. The contractor hired to assist with seeding of fairways and roughs, primarily on the back nine holes completed their work. Approximately 60 acres were seeded and Dean reported he is well pleased with the status of the course at this time of year. He will begin seeding 14 greens this week. Recent rains have been ideal for the new seed and turf growth is accelerating. Dean has begun to mow certain areas of the course. Approximately 427 trees have been removed to date. Dredging of the irrigation pond is about complete with a great amount of sediment being removed. The pond appears to be recharging from the river as expected. The board discussed use of the driving range and projected dates to play limited holes on the course. July 1 is projected for use of the range and August 1 is projected for use of limited holes on the course. These dates can change depending on turf and weather conditions. The tree planting event on May 1 went well with 220 trees being planted. Approximately 25 volunteers assisted in the project.

Director Farnsworth added that a contract would be presented to the Mayor and Commission for consideration for rebuilding parts of the cart paths that were eroded during the flood. This work would be done at the same time the Lewis and Clark trail is rebuilt.

Farnsworth stated May 1 was the deadline for customers to pay the 2012 cart storage and locker fees. Superintendent Heymans and Carin Hayn will meet this week to review who has not paid and the City will send a notice to these customers.

The Board welcomed the new Head Golf Professional Carin Hayn. A meet and greet event will be planned in the future as an opening date is decided upon. Hayn greeted the board and is looking forward to the opportunity.

Heymans explained the USGA Turf Agronomist Fred Soller is scheduling a visit to Hillsview for May 29th. Staff will coordinate a time where customers can come and meet Mr. Soller and hear his opinions on the recovery of the course, etc.

Farnsworth explained there is a board vacancy now that Hayn has been hired to be the Head Professional. Interested citizens can fill out an application on line at www.pierre.sd.gov and Mayor Gill will give consideration to them. Mayor Gill makes the appointment.

Board member Schoessler discussed efforts he has made to work on getting an alcohol license for Hillsview. The course is eligible for a malt beverage and wine license.

Next Golf Advisory Board Meeting is June 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the clubhouse.

Meeting was adjourned at 6:25 p.m.

Respectively submitted,

Tom Farnsworth
