Article 4 PEDESTRIAN RIGHTS AND DUTIES

 

Sections 9-4-101 to 199, inclusive. Pedestrian rights and duties - general provisions.

 

Section 9-4-101. Pedestrian obedience to traffic control devices and traffic regulation.

A.        A pedestrian shall obey the instruction of any official traffic control device specifically applicable to him, unless otherwise directed by a police officer.

B.        Pedestrians shall be subject to traffic control signals as provided in this chapter.

C.        At all other places, pedestrians shall be accorded the privileges and shall be subject to the restrictions of this chapter.

Section 9-4-102. Pedestrian street crossing only at marked or unmarked crosswalks.

A.        No pedestrian shall cross a roadway at any place other than by a route at right angles to the curb at an intersection with a marked or unmarked crosswalk.

B.        A pedestrian may cross the roadway at a place other than an intersection provided that there is a marked crosswalk.

Section 9-4-103. Unlawful soliciting of rides.

            It shall be unlawful for any person to stand or walk in the roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from the operator of any vehicle.

Section 9-4-104. Pedestrians yield to authorized emergency vehicle.

            Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle making use of audible and visual signals as required in 9-1-106, every pedestrian shall yield right of way to the authorized emergency vehicle.

Section 9-4-105. Pedestrian under the influence.

            A pedestrian who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs to a degree that renders himself a hazard shall not walk or be upon a roadway.

Section 9-4-106. Pedestrians on sidewalks.

A.        The driver of any vehicle operating on or crossing a sidewalk shall yield the right of way to any pedestrian.

B.        A pedestrian traveling on the sidewalk shall have right of way over any other traffic on the sidewalk.
