Pierre
Airport Offering Great Rates with Second
Daily Flights to Minneapolis and Denver
PIERRE, S.D. – Mayor Laurie R. Gill is
reminding citizens to check out the
competitive airfares being offered at
www.flygreatlakes.com now that the
Pierre airport is offering a second daily
flight to Minneapolis and Denver. On April 2
Great Lakes Airlines announced they are
offering a 6 am and 12:18 pm departure to
Minneapolis and a 7:32 am and 5:10 pm
departure to Denver from the Pierre regional
airport. Gill says the addition of those
early flights makes it possible for
passengers to make it back to Pierre by
10:18 pm from Minneapolis and 9:23 pm from
Denver, which can be very attractive to
those doing business and needing to return
home the same day.
Gill says when comparing rates to fly out of
Pierre vs. Rapid City, consumers will find
the airfare to Minneapolis as low as $260
and to Denver as low as $285 compared to
$446 and $346 when flying out of Rapid City,
“Not only are these great rates to offer
customers, they will find additional savings
because Pierre has no parking fees, extra
hotel costs and short security lines when
checking in”. “Customers will also save wear
and tear on their vehicles by not having to
drive to another regional airport.”
Customers purchasing thirty days in advance
on
www.flygreatlakes.com can see even
greater savings, as low as $200 round trip
to Minneapolis and Denver.
Gill says many other destinations can be
booked by either going online at
www.delta.com or
www.united.com or citizens can contact
their favorite travel agent and book tickets
to their destination, “Remember to compare
rates and take advantage of what Pierre
regional airport has to offer, the savings
and convenience you will find is well worth
it.”
4th Street Multi Use Trail Route
Motorists that travel 4th Street this year will soon notice construction of a 7,000 ft. long x 8 ft. wide multi-use trail beginning at Governor’s Drive south of the State Health laboratory and ending at the intersection of 4th Street and Bristol. The trail project, to be built in 2012, was a multi agency effort with partners in funding and development including SD Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, City of Pierre Engineering Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Hughes County and SD Game Fish and Parks. Morris Inc. of Ft. Pierre is the contractor. The project will include a historic Hughes County bridge 67 ft. in length and 15 ft. wide to be placed over Mickelson pond. The Park and Recreation board is considering other amenities that would enhance the trail such as restrooms, benches, trees, shrubs, a fishing pier, parking and play structures. Civic organizations with an interest in sponsoring an item should contact Tom Farnsworth, Director of Parks and Recreation at 773-2527. The Parks and Recreation board will work through the summer in planning the various amenities and represent them to the City for consideration in the 2013 budget.

Tree Fund Established for City Arboretum
The City of Pierre is accepting donations to purchase and replant trees in the City Arboretum, located near the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse in southeast Pierre.
Parks and Recreation Director Tom Farnsworth said all donations will be placed in a separate “tree fund” and planting is expected to begin next spring. The Parks and Recreation Department and the City Arbor Board will oversee all purchases and plantings. Individuals or organizations that contribute $50 or more will have their names listed in the City Arboretum’s kiosk. There is no immediate deadline for contributing to this project, as Farnworth expects the planting to take one or two years to complete. Anyone with further questions or comments regarding this project should contact Farnsworth at (605) 773-2527 or via e-mail at Tom.Farnsworth@ci.pierre.sd.us. All contributions are tax deductible.
Checks should be made out to the City of Pierre – Tree fund and can be mailed to 222 East Dakota, Pierre, SD 57501.
