Local photographer David Pfahler snapped this image of a moose on LaFrombois Island in Pierre early Saturday, February 27, 2010. Pfahler was among a privileged few to spot 'her' over the weekend, a treat made even more surreal by the dense early morning fog and heavy frost on the brush and trees.
Local Game, Fish and Parks officials say its rare for a moose to migrate through the area, but not unheard of. The long winter of 2010 and heavy snow pack further to the north may have had something to do with the route 'she' took.
Pfahler says he was able to snap a number of photos, but it's the above image that is the 'talk of the town.'
While he enjoys telling the story of the LaFrambois Island moose, Dave is quick to caution people to avoid contact with the moose and worries that too many people searching for the moose will only drive 'her' off the island. GF&P officials agree and say humans should always respect wildlife - from a distance. Pfahler used a telephoto lens to get his remarkable image.
'She' has not been spotted since Sunday morning and is thought to have continued along her journey in search of spring.
