Pierre Municipal Utilities has received national recognition for achieving exceptional electric reliability in 2017. The recognition comes from the American Public Power Association, a trade group that represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities.
The Association helps members track outage and restoration data through its subscription-based eReliability Tracker service and then compares the data to national statistics tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of electric utilities.
The Association’s data shows that Pierre’s electrical power is reliable 99.99% of the time. It also shows that in 2017, Pierre Utility customers averaged less than 15 minutes of power outages. While nationally, the average electric customers experienced more than 100 minutes without electricity.
“This recognition is a testament to the hard work of all our staff to ensure that the lights stay on for all our customers,” said Brad Palmer, City of Pierre Utility Director.
Palmer went on to say that the City has made recent investments in its electrical infrastructure to help ensure that reliability. Those investments include upgrades to substations and its distribution systems in both 2013 and 2018, as well as transmission line upgrades in 2013.
Michael Hyland, the Association’s Senior Vice President of Engineering Services said that public power has a strong track record of reliability. Nationwide, the average public power customer has their lights out for less than half the time, compared to other types of utilities.
