Commission Pushes Two Projects Forward
Tonight, at their regularly scheduled meeting, the Pierre City Commission committed to helping the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area remodel its existing facility. The Commission also committed to the next step to replace Pierre’s outdoor pool.

Without taking official action, the City Commission verbally committed to helping the Boys and Girls Club remodel its existing facility. Last summer, representatives from the Club presented their remodeling plan to the City Commission. Tonight, provided the Club can secure the additional funding, the Commission agreed to pay for 50% up to $2 million for the remodel of the nearly 30-year-old building.
“We’re committed to partnering with the Club to provide the children who use the facility with a safe and appropriately appointed space,” said Pierre Mayor Steve Harding.
The City of Pierre owns the building that houses the Boys and Girls Club. According to Mayor Harding, the building’s mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems are all at the end of their life; additionally, the Club has outgrown the space.
Tonight, the Commission voted to enter into a “Step 2” agreement with Burbach Aquatics, a pool consulting firm. This $2,250 agreement will help determine the design for a new outdoor pool in Pierre.
“Burbach Aquatics will lead a volunteer citizen committee through the process of determining a pool design that will best meet the needs of our community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tom Farnsworth.
In coming weeks, the Mayor will appoint the Outdoor Pool Committee members. The goal is for the Committee to deliver a design and funding plan to the Pierre City Commission by this fall.
Burbach Aquatics has been in the municipal aquatic design and engineering business for 38 years. The firm has designed more than 600 municipal pools in 16 states throughout the country, including the municipal pools in Beresford and Vermillion that both opened in 2017.
