Volunteers Rally for “Go Green” Campaign

Volunteers Rally for “Go Green” Campaign

PIERRE, S.D. – More than 125 volunteers will hit the streets this month to make Pierre a cleaner, more inviting community. Their volunteer work is all in the name of the Go Green and Clean campaign.

The civic pride campaign, now in its seventh year, is a community-wide spring clean-up effort designed to prepare Pierre for its many summer visitors. More than 25 volunteer groups will work to clear litter and debris, stain park signs, clean flower beds, and paint public restrooms.

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill, who started the campaign shortly after being elected Mayor, says that the campaign is about more than just cleaning up Pierre.

“This campaign is really about taking care of not only our community, but also our natural resources and the role each of us can have in keeping Pierre healthy,” said Gill.

Mayor Gill will carry that message of community service and volunteerism when she kicks off this year’s campaign with an address to Riggs High School students on Wednesday, April 13.

The campaign also includes a number of educational programs about greenhouse gardening, tree trimming, and tree planting. The volunteer projects are spread out over the two week period of April 17 - April 30.

“Each year I am blown away by the generosity of our community members. The time our businesses, organizations and individuals commit to volunteering for Go Green and Clean is a wonderful indicator of Pierre’s community-minded culture,” said Gill. “I want to publicly thank all the volunteers for everything they do throughout the year to make Pierre a great place to live!”

Pierre is always looking for new Go Green initiatives and partnerships. Citizens with an interest in the campaign should contact Tom Farnsworth, Director of Parks and Recreation at 773-2527.
