Laurie R. Gill is Pierre’s 18th mayor. First elected Mayor in 2008, Gill is now in her third term after being re-elected in both 2011 and 2014. Prior to being elected mayor, she served as a Pierre City Commissioner for nine years.
Under her leadership, the community successfully recovered from the historic 2011 Missouri River flood, expanded the city’s walking and bike trails, launched Go Green and Clean -an ongoing civic pride campaign, constructed a new airport terminal, and is enjoying significant growth –most recently in the community’s northeast corridor. Throughout Gill’s tenure, the City has remained committed to infrastructure improvements that support existing entities, nurture growth and ensure citizens enjoy reliable and safe city services.
As a part-time Mayor, Gill also has a full-time job serving as a Cabinet Member for Governor Dennis Daugaard. In 2013, Gill was appointed Commissioner of the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources. Prior to that, Gill served as Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Human Services, held numerous other leadership positions within state government, worked in a non-profit agency and as a clinic administrator in the private sector.
Gill serves on several community group boards including the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce, Capital University Center, South Dakota Municipal League, and Capital City Beautification committee.
Gill is a graduate of SDSU with a Commercial Economics degree. Gill and her husband Bob moved to Pierre with their four children in 1991. When time allows, she enjoys visiting her children and grandchildren, traveling, and reading.
