The City of Pierre has a population of approximately 13,646 and encompasses approximately 13 square miles of streets and roads. The Pierre Police Department provides protection to the City of Pierre, its residents and visitors 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with an annual budget of approximately two (2) million dollars. The Pierre Police Department is located in the Solem Public Safety Center as you enter the city from the east on Highway 34. As you can see from the attached picture, you are greeted with flowers and a decorative retaining wall upon entering the complex.
Pierre not only serves as the county seat for Hughes County, it also serves as the capitol city for the State of South Dakota. The legislative session brings into our community 70 members from the House of Representatives and 36 Senators, plus approximately 30 part-time session employees.
